Re: I-95 Rappahannock River Crossing Public Comment

The I-95 Rappahannock River Crossing (Crossing) project is vital to improving the major traffic east coast vein of I-95 and congestion in the Fredericksburg Region. Commuters and many others who travel here understand the need for vast infrastructure improvements along the I-95 corridor.

Having safe and efficient roadways will always be my priority. I understand that uncertain economic conditions require that we continuously prioritize and look for creative ways to meet the demand for improvement in our area. This project is among the top of those necessary Virginia priorities. This stretch of I-95 is one of the most heavily traveled in the entire eastern US.

As a result, I have continually supported funding and progress on the Crossing. This project will improve the overall safety of the interstate, provide sorely needed capacity, reduce conflict points, and create improved mobility. The issuing of the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) has provided a positive outlook on the environmental impacts of the Crossing that will minimize the burden of construction and environmental cost to the local area.  It is for these reasons that I believe it is imperative we fund construction on the Crossing as quickly as possible.

Funding the I-95 Rappahannock River Crossing is an important step to improving the Commonwealth’s infrastructure, however more needs to be done. Our region needs a comprehensive multi-prong approach to making actual improvements to the traffic flow. I urge the Commonwealth Transportation Board and VDOT to also look at funding:

  1. Added lane capacity on I-95 from the Express Lane terminus to the Rappahannock River Crossing.
  2.  Reviewing Long Term Multi-Modal and P3 Opportunities
  3. Major improvements along the Route 1 corridor as the only alternative to I-95 congestion.

Thank you for the opportunity to comment on this project, and please do not hesitate to contact me regarding any aspect of these comments.
